Students Edge Teachers, Raise Over $900 for Foundation

On Tue., April 8, 2014, Bel Air High School held their annual Matt Rutherford Student vs. Faculty Basketball Game.

The student faculty game was a charity event for The Math Rutherford Foundation. The money to enter the game, competitions during the game, raffles and prizes were donations given to the foundation.  Overall, a total of $971 has been collected, with more donations coming in during the lunches in school.

The final score to the game was 51-50, in favor of the students. After three consecutive years of losing to the teachers in the basketball game, the students were finally able to come out on top.  The student’s team was coached by Caroline Lozzi and Nick Loiodice. Strong players on the teacher’s team included Mr. Weeks, Mr. Stearns and Mr. Doyle, each doing their part to foil the students. Strong players on the student’s team included Tommy Keller with killer rebounds, Renie Tsomos with great ball handling skills and Jacob Vasquez with the game winning three point shot. Throughout the whole game, the score was back and forth with the two teams trading the lead. The students were down by two points until Jacob Vasquez sank a three pointer with 1.8 seconds left, eliminating the teachers’ hope of a win.

“So many emotions were going through my head and I didn’t know how to react. It was an exhilarating moment,” said game winning shooter Jacob Vasquez.

“These games are always fun to compete in against the students. Due to all the other obligations of students at our school was good to see, it is all for such a good cause. I’m glad the seniors came out on top,” said science teacher Mr. Weeks.

Prizes were handed out throughout the night by winning raffle tickets. Two Graduation tickets were handed out, a free parking pass, a pass for a free membership for a month at the Arena club, and other sweet prizes such as candy and gift cards.

Mr. Skelton, the official ref of the game, commented, “We know how to improve on the event night next year, however it was so much fun to come out and see.”
