Summer is Here… And So is Summer Work

On Tue., June 3, Principal Gregory Komondor sent out an email to teachers concerning summer work at Bel Air High School. After a long discussion with Ms. Canavan, the Superintendent of HCPS and Mr.Schmitz, the Director of Secondary Education, Mr. Komondor stated that new summer work requirements were made.

Many students have heard rumors that Bel Air High School will not be issuing summer work, but after an interview with Mr. Komondor, the Bellarion can confirm that this rumor is false. Guidelines were set as to what teachers could and could not assign as summer work, these requirements being to give summer work that is relevant to the class, that is mandatory, and that will be on the first quarter progress report.

After students met with Ms.Canavan and her administrative team about summer work, Mr. Komondor and BAHS guidance counselor Mrs. Knight reviewed past summer work from the students. After reviewing, Mr. Komondor sent out a mass email explaining the requirements above to the teachers. He also asked that the teachers, “Please take into consideration the fact that many students are taking more than one AP course.”

At the beginning of next year Ms. Knight, and any other AP teachers who volunteer their time, will conduct a survey to both students and teachers concerning summer work, AP scores, AP data, and the number of test takers. To determine whether summer work is or is not affecting the number taking AP and the AP scores; data will not only be collected from Harford County Public Schools, but other counties in the state of Maryland.

Mr. Komondor ends the email by stating, “Thank you for taking the time to read this email and I hope the school year ends on a positive note for all of you.” You can talk to your future teacher about honor or AP summer assignments. You can also check on Edline where under “Contents”, there is a folder called “All Summer Work” containing links to departments in which all summer work will be located. Make sure to check up on this, and have a great summer Bobcats!
