Boys’ Lacrosee Tames Mustangs

The Bel Air Bobcats Boys’ Lacrosse Team took on the C. Milton Wright Mustangs, on Wed., April 16, 2014, at Bel Air High School. The Bobcats went into the game after handily defeating Edgewood last week. The ‘Cats were able to continue their winning streak, easing by C. Milton with the score of 13-5.

The Bobcats’ got off to a quick start as Senior Captain Calvin Fleagle netted a shot, put the Bobcats up 1-0 with 8:14 left in the first quarter. The Mustang defense tightened up and held the Bobcats to one goal until Senior Captain Joey Creaghan got through the defense and scored to put the Bobcats up 2-0 with 24.9 seconds left. Fleagle squeaked a goal in at the end of the quarter just 8 seconds later, giving the Bobcats a 3-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Bobcats and the Mustangs continued to take shots but no one could score until the Mustangs finally scored with 2:42 left in the second quarter. The Bobcats then went on a three goal run in the last two minutes; Thomas Pfeiffer scored all three of the unanswered goals. The Bobcats went into the second half with a 6-1 lead.

The Mustangs were able to strike first in the third quarter as they scored with 11:10 left, cutting the Bobcat lead to 4. The ‘Cats were able to fire back quickly as Creaghan scored with 7:48 left to make the score 7-2. The Mustangs were able to score almost instantly afterwards with 7:29 remaining to bring the score to 7-3. The Mustangs and Bobcats then traded goals, and Creaghan was able to score again for the Bobcats with 3:34 left in the third, making the score 9-4.

The Bobcats put their foot on the pedal in the fourth quarter as Junior Garret Utz scored with 10:40 left. Soon after, Creaghan scored with 9:49 left in the quarter to make the score 11-4. Utz was able to help the Bobcats once again as he scored with 8:43 remaining in the fourth to put the Bobcats up 12-4. Fleagle scored again with 7:46 left to make the score 13-4. The Mustangs then scored with 1:00 left to make the score 13-5, but it was too late.

The leading goal scorer on the night for the Bobcats was Senior Captain Joey Creaghan with 4 goals and Senior Captain Calvin Fleagle led the Bobcats in assists with 5. Junior Anthony Sampayo was 18 for 21 on faceoffs for the night.

Senior Calvin Fleagle liked the win, but is keeping his head up for the next opponent. “We got off to a slow start but we picked it up and did what we needed to do and came out on top. [It was a] great county win, but we’re on to the next one.”
