Girls’ Lax Tame Gators to Win Sectional Championship

On Mon., May 12, 2014, the Girls’ Lacrosse Team traveled to Perry Hall High School to play the Gators in the Regional Semi-Finals.

The Gators struck first, scoring two consecutive goals in the first ten minutes of the game. Sophomore Anna Wehland maneuvered her way through the Gator defense to find the back of the net to cut the Gator lead to 1. The Gators and Bobcats traded goals to make the score 3-2; the Bobcat goal came from Freshman Anna Farley. To answer Farley’s goal, the Gators would score again and pull ahead 4-2. The Bobcats responded when Junior Morgan Hollenback came down the middle and scored at the 8 minute mark. Once again, the Gators would answer, extending their lead to 2. Coming down to the last couple seconds in the first half, Senior Danni Wilson saw a Bobcat open inside the 8 meter line but the Gator goalie got a piece of the ball and knocked down the pass. Fortunately, the ball rolled into the goal at the 40 second mark to trim the Gator lead to 1. The score would remain 5-4 going into half time.

The Gators came out and scored the first goal of the second half. Senior Captain Tori Gryglweski found the back of the net to bring the score to 6-5. The Gators answered by netting one of their own to make the score7-5. Farley scored two goals to tie up the game at 7. The Gators responded to take the lead again, 8-7. Farley then tallied the next Bobcat goal to tie the score up at 8. The Gators did not give up and scored one of their own but Hall asked the referees for a stick check on the player who had scored the goal. The refs deemed the stick as an illegal cross and the goal was called back. Hollenback took the ball down the field and netted a beautiful goal around the Gator goalie, giving the Bobcats the 9-8 lead over the Gators. The Bobcat defense came up huge in the last final seconds in the second half by causing a turnover in the Gator’s offensive zone and worked together to clear the ball to the Bobcat offensive zone. Gryglweski would net the final Bobcat goal at the buzzer with .2 seconds left to secure the Bobcat win over Perry Hall in the Regional Semi-Finals, 10-8.

The ‘Cats defense held the Gators to only three goals in the second half and played a very solid and smart defense game to help cause turnovers to help the offense to get back in action. Junior Shannon Williams would win three draw controls for the Bobcats.  Farley, Keesey, and Hollenback each tallied one draw control.

“It was a very intense game and we played to the final second,” stated Freshman Anna Farley. “We never got down on ourselves and did what we had to do to advance to the championship.”

“Stepping on the field at Perry Hall after playing them ten days ago, you could feel the intensity. They came out ready to play and so did we,” said Senior Captain Tori Gryglewski. “As tough it was for us to get the win, we never gave up. Begin behind most of the game didn’t change anything because we played smart, took control and kept our composure. We worked together as a family and did what we planned to do. We hope to continue to keep making history.”

The Bobcats advance to the Regional Championship game to play Catonsville High School at home in Bobcat Stadium at 6 P.M. to compete for a Regional Title and a trip to State Semi-Finals.
