The Christmas Season May Be Over, but the Holiday Season Is Not

The saddest part of the holidays is when they’re all over. Most of the year’s biggest holidays happen over a period of two weeks, and after that there are months and months without holidays.  There are no more gifts to unwrap, no more turkey and/or ham to eat, no more candles to light, and no more ridiculous sunglasses to wear with eyeholes cut out that don’t even fit the shape of the number.

However, most people aren’t aware of the plethora of interesting, unique, and downright fun holidays that you can celebrate throughout the month of February, regardless of your religious affiliation.

Feb. 4 marks our first holiday pit stop. “Create a Vacuum Day” is by far the most challenging and expensive holiday to celebrate, but is arguably the most rewarding.  Scientists have struggled for years to create a space that is void of all matter and have not yet been successful in the endeavor. But now there is an entire day in the year to devote your heart and soul and every last bit of your essence into creating the perfect vacuum.

Feb. 7 is “Wave All Your Fingers at Your Neighbor Day”. The name says it all. All you need to do to celebrate this holiday is take your fingers and move them in a side to side motion in the general direction of people who live near you. Happiness will most likely ensue.

The second Monday of every February is “Clean Out Your Computer Day”. While it is a day for you to delete old files from your computer, it also serves as an excuse for you to take that disgusting computer of yours and wipe it off with a rag. I mean honestly, do you want to be a slob for the rest of your life? Do you ever dust? All I’m asking is for you to clean out your computer once a year, so do it.

On Feb. 13 we celebrate “Get a Different Name Day”. This day is the day where you choose a name other than your own that you feel better represents you as a person. Bonus points if you legally change your name.

“Singles Awareness Day” is an alternate Valentine’s Day that takes place on the Feb. 15. It’s a day for singles everywhere who did not get the chance to celebrate Valentine’s Day to have a good time. Singles can go out and have a nice, romantic dinner for one, or take a walk on a beach, or maybe even skydive. Just be sure to treat yourself special.

The Feb. 26 is “Tell a Friend a Fairy Tale Day”. It is a day full of magic and splendor, a day filled with marvel and beauty, a day where your inner child can come out and listen to tales of wizards, knights, fairies and pirates. You can recite classic fairy tales like Peter Pan or The Hobbit, or make up your own.  Just have fun.

And finally, Feb. 28 marks the long awaited “Public Sleeping Day”. This is a day where you can sleep wherever you want. Popular sleeping sites include the office, at school, park benches, and the lawn of the white house. Veteran public sleepers will bring pillows, blankets, stuffed animals, and even inflatable mattresses to their desired sleeping spot.

Although the month of February is filled with holidays, we still encourage you to make up your own holiday, for whatever you please. Just be sure to stay safe.
