Summers around Harford County are always filled with many things to do. Whether you like movies or live music and food, there is an activity this summer that will interest anyone.

One of the most popular reoccurring events this summer is Shamrock Park’s Outdoor Movies. The night starts out with live performances starting at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free and so is the popcorn, but there are multiple vendors there selling other snacks. The movie, usually a recent G-rated kid’s movie, begins playing as the sun sets. This year’s schedule starts out with Monsters University on June 13 and continues with Frozen on June 27, Despicable Me 2 on July 18, Muppets Most Wanted on July 25, The Lego Movie on August 15 and finally, Brave on August 22.

“Everyone is sitting around watching the movie, it’s a good atmosphere like the drive in movies, and it’s really cool. I love the experience,” says junior Emily League about the outdoor movies.

If you aren’t interested in movies outside, Regal Cinemas offers multiple movies during the summer for only $1, as part of their “Summer Movie Express” program. The movies start at 10 a.m. and include more G-rated hits, such as Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 and The Croods. The program runs for 9 weeks, giving families a choice of two movies on select Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Harford County Public Libraries run a summer reading program every summer that encourages children and teens to read, even though they aren’t in school. Even if reading isn’t something you’re willing to do while on vacation, it’s still a very fun program to join. After reading the minimum number of books (children- 10 books, teens- 5 books), students can receive prizes such as gift cards or free books.

First Fridays, in both Bel Air and Havre de Grace, are a great community event filled with live music and food. Main Streets in downtown Bel Air and downtown Havre de Grace shut down so everyone living in the town can support the local businesses and have a fun time.

“A bunch of people go to [First Fridays] and it’s something fun to do. I really enjoy walking around Main Street when it’s closed down and visit all the shops,” junior Megan Lisenbee said of Bel Air’s First Fridays.

And near the end of the summer, the Harford County Farm Fair will return to the Harford County Equestrian Center with rides, exhibits, and many fun games and activities. The fair will be held on July 31 – August 3. Adult tickets are $8, children ages 5-11 get in for $4 while children ages 4 and under are free.

“There’s a lot to do,” said Junior Kirsten Rodriguez. “There’s something for everyone.”
